O PAPEL DÚBIO DOS NEUTRÓFILOS NA INFECÇÃO POR PARASITOS DO GÊNERO Leishmania: UMA BREVE DISCUSSÃO

Abstract

Este estudo trata do envolvimento dos neutrófilos, granulócitos polimorfonucleares, no estabelecimento da infecção pelos parasitos do gênero Leishmania. Embora tais leucócitos sejam considerados a primeira linha de defesa do sistema imune inato do organismo contra agentes patogênicos, estudos têm indicado a participação do mesmo como veículo de disseminação dos parasitos Leishmania major no organismo hospedeiro. Por outro lado, estudos envolvendo os parasitos Leishmania donovani e/ou Leishmania infantum/chagasi têm demonstrado o papel protetor destas células, contrariando a hipótese do “Cavalo de Tróia” postulada para o modelo de infecção por Leishmania major. Pretende-se, portanto, discutir brevemente, através de uma revisão sistemática da literatura, o papel dúbio dos neutrófilos na infecção por parasitos causadores das leishmanioses.

THE DUAL ROLE OF NEUTROPHILS IN THE INFECTION BY PARASITES OF Leishmania GENUS: A BRIEF DISCUSSION

This study deals with the involvement of neutrophils, polymorphonuclear granulocytes, in the establishment of the infection by parasites of the Leishmania genus.  Although such leukocytes are considered the first line of defense of the innate immune system against pathogenic agents, studies have shown their participation as means of dissemination of the parasites Leishmania major  in host organism.  On the other hand, studies involving the parasites Leishmania donovani and/or Leishmania infantum/chagasi have shown the protective role of these cells, contradicting the "Trojan Horse" hypothesis assumed for the Leishmania major infection model.  It is intended, therefore, to discuss briefly, through a systematic revision of literature, the dual role of the neutrophils in the infection by parasites which cause leishmaniasis.
